Choosing the right size rug is the single biggest decision in pulling a room together. A rug that's too small looks marooned; a rug that's too big swallows the floor. Here's our expert guide for every room in the house.
Living rooms
The general rule: every piece of furniture in the seating arrangement should have at least its front legs on the rug. This anchors the space and makes the seating area feel intentional.
- Small living room (under 4ร4m): 160 ร 230cm โ sofa front legs on rug, coffee table fully on rug.
- Medium living room (4โ5m square): 200 ร 290cm โ all sofa and chair front legs on rug.
- Large living room (over 5m): 240 ร 340cm or larger โ entire seating arrangement on rug with at least 30cm of rug visible around it.
Bedrooms
You want the rug to extend past the bed on three sides so your feet land on softness when you get out of bed.
- Single / Small double: 160 ร 230cm placed two-thirds under the bed.
- Double bed: 200 ร 290cm centred under the bed, foot-end extension.
- King / Super King: 240 ร 340cm or two bedside runners (80 ร 240cm each).
Dining rooms
The rug should be large enough that chairs stay on it even when pulled out. Measure your table and add 60โ75cm on every side.
Hallways
Runners look best with 10โ15cm of floor showing on each side. For long hallways, a single 80 ร 300cm runner is more elegant than two short ones.
Pro tip
Tape it out before you buy. Use painter's tape to mark the rug size on your floor and live with it for a day. You'll know immediately if it's right.
