Care & Maintenance

The complete rug care guide

Your rug is built for real British family life. With a simple routine, it'll look as beautiful in five years as it does today.

Weekly

Vacuum gently. Low suction, beater bar off on high-pile rugs.

Monthly

Rotate 180° to distribute wear and sunlight evenly.

Twice a year

Deep clean — machine wash if size allows, or professional cleaning.

Weekly: vacuum gently

Use the lowest suction setting. On shaggy or high-pile rugs, switch off the beater bar — it pulls fibres. Vacuum in the direction of the pile, not against it. Quick weekly vacuum keeps grit from working into the foundation, which is the single biggest cause of premature wear.

Stain-by-stain quick guide

Stain What to do
Red wine Blot. Sprinkle table salt heavily, leave 10 min. Vacuum. Finish with cool soapy water.
Coffee / tea Blot. Mix 1 tsp dish soap + 1 tsp white vinegar in warm water. Apply with cloth. Blot dry.
Pet accidents Kitchen roll. 50/50 vinegar-water mix. Blot. Sprinkle baking soda. Vacuum when dry.
Mud Let it dry first. Vacuum, then spot-clean any remaining mark.
Grease / oil Cover with bicarb of soda for 30 min. Vacuum. Treat residue with dish soap.
Chocolate / blood Cold water only — heat sets the stain. Blot from outside in.
Always blot, never rub. Press a clean white cloth onto the spill, working from the outside in. Rubbing spreads the stain and damages fibres.

Never:

  • Use bleach or harsh chemical cleaners
  • Tumble dry (always air-dry flat)
  • Place a wet rug back on hardwood — risk of warping
  • Steam-clean synthetic rugs unless the label says it's safe

Storing for the summer?

1
Vacuum thoroughly

Both sides. Remove all dust and debris first.

2
Roll, don't fold

Pile side in. Folding creates creases that may not come out.

3
Wrap in cotton

Breathable cotton sheet, not plastic. Plastic traps moisture and causes mildew.

4
Cool dry place

Loft, garage shelf, or under-bed storage all work.

Three minutes a week is all it takes. A well-cared-for rug lasts decades.
